Today we had our first of what is one of my favorite days at camp – Sunday. Camp Sundays are different, and this is by design! We believe that as humans, we are made to live life in rhythms of work, play, and rest. Sunday is the day we get to embrace the specific rhythm of rest (with plenty of play sprinkled in, too!) On Sundays we move slowly, embrace joy and fun, and focus on the core of what makes camp special – relationships. It’s a favorite around here, for good reason!

We started off the day by sleeping in an hour later (reveille at 8am), and then enjoying a leisurely breakfast of cinnamon rolls, bagels, and sausage patties (with a grit and fruit bar!) Chapel came next for a time of singing and prayer, and then it was off to cabins for cabin cleanup and cabin photos. After that, campers could choose their own adventure for the day. Here’s a list of some of our Sunday Funday Activities:

“Footie” at Spencer’s green (think big soccer games)

Sunday at the Master’s (a tradition unlike any other, aka a disc golf tournament)

Fishing and Frog catching at the lake

Sand Castle Building at the beach

Fort Building in the woods

Card Games at the chapel

Skit rehearsal

Giant Jenga games at the Mark

Midway through the morning, a group of our campers took a trip to Merri-Mac, our sister camp, to see their sisters and spend time together swimming, playing gaga ball, and just catching up.

Roman R. F., Charles A., Camp M., Coleman J., Ben T., and Luke H. went on an awesome fly fishing trip on the North Toe.

The rest of camp feasted on a delicious lunch of sub sandwiches with pretzel bites and pineapple, followed by a full hour of rest time, which was enjoyed by all.

After rest time, the trading post and clothing room were open for business, as well as a free swim, pickleball tournament, spontaneous card games, pickup basketball and soccer, and plenty of fishing.

We all gathered at the Mark for our traditional Sunday cookout (with fresh watermelon from one of our own campers’ farm!), and headed to the chapel for Vespers. During Vespers, we sang, we watched skits, we laughed, we worshiped, and we heard a devotional from John.

As the day comes to a close, sounds of laughter are coming from the lake as intermediate camp is free swimming before taps, senior campers are sneaking in a few more rounds of soccer and basketball, and junior campers are winding down for bed. Days like today are ones that feel like a reflection of heaven on earth – slowing down to be present with one another and soak in the beauty of God’s creation and the joy of the life He has given us. What a gift!

Until next time,
