Sundays at camp are truly one-of a-kind in the best way. We move slowly, relax, and spend time playing and creating. Our hope is that Sundays feel special and different because we believe they’re meant to be that way! We started the day by sleeping in an hour late and having a delicious, leisurely breakfast of cinnamon rolls, bagels, sausage, and a grit bar.

At chapel we sang and spent time praying for each cabin individually, then all headed back to our cabins to take cabin photos and to clean up and get ready for the day. Before Sunday Funday activities began, we all gathered at the beach to watch the start of the Timber-Tri – one of my all time favorite camp traditions. This triathlon is open to all senior campers, and consists of a 250m swim, 2.5 mile bike, and 2 mile run. This year we had 6 participants – Henry O. , Mason S., Elliot G., Lewis J., Noah H., and Hayes T. All of them successfully completed this challenge, and Henry O. won for his third year in a row with a time of 36:46! Mason S. came in 2nd in 39:53, and Elliot G took third in 40:20. The Timber-tri is healthy competition at its best, and all of camp had a blast cheering the participants on.

At lunch, we ate southwest wraps with pears and homemade potato chips (and baked potatoes at the hot bar). While munching on ice cream sandwiches (!!!! Sunday lunch dessert!!) we found out that Tiger Tooth won cabin cleanup with a perfect 10! The Golden Eagles won junior and intermediate camp sock war, and Little Piney won senior camp cabin night.

The Timber-tri wasn’t the only place where competitive fun was going on at camp today. Up at the courts we had a pickleball tournament, where Ryan H. and Charlie B. took home the victory. At the Mark, Wills W. hit a buzzer beater 3 pointer to send his team to the 3 v 3 basketball tournament championship. Alas, in the championship he and his team were defeated by team “Little maniacs” Will M., William Q., Alex D. and John Menendez.

Edward S. won Sunday at the Master’s (a tradition unlike any other), and Team Turtleshell from Turtleback won fort building with an epic structure.

The rest of camp could be found swimming, fishing, frog catching, just and spending time together. We all gathered together at the Mark for our traditional Sunday burgers, hot dogs, watermelon, chips, and the famous campfire cookie. We rounded out the day with vespers – a time of worship, goofy songs, and skits, and then an exciting round of counselor hunt. Counselor hunt is exactly what it sounds….a massive game of hide and seek where the counselors hide and campers take off on the hunt. Could anything be more fun than that?

As the day winds down, I’m hearing the sounds of cabins laughing together, crickets chirping, and the quietness of evening setting in. Taps have rung for junior camp camp already, and the lyrics to this song seem like a fitting way to sign off for tonight: “Day is done, gone the sun, from the lake, from the hills, from the sky; all is well, safely rest, God is nigh”.
