As the mist that veils our mountain in mystic loveliness rose this morning, yet another wonderful Friday began here at Camp Timberlake.

After breakfast and a mind-boggling morning yell from Charlie Vedder, we went to chapel where the boys joined their voices together and raised them to the Lord, before Caleb told us a true story about crashing a dirt bike and needing a rescuer. Then it was off to clean those cabins.

However, a lucky few got to escape the chores today, as we had a few awesome trips out. Theo T. Zach M. Kaito T. Jack S. Beckett B. Reid S. and Cooper W.  were coming back to camp from their overnight canoeing trip. While Max C. Andrew M.  Theo L. Grayson J. Robert B. and Marshall S. suited up to go backpacking.

Morning activities came and went, and the hard play was rewarded with an amazing lunch of Gyros and potato chips. As everyone looked forward to a well-deserved nap, those that participated in the Adventure race today saw it as only a quick stop before their challenge began.

Completing the Timberlake adventure race is a feat unlike any other. Teams of four compete in a series of challenges that test not only physical, but also mental skills at camp. This race begins at rest time (~1:25) and the deadline to finish is the start of dinner (5:30). The challenges span the entirety of camp property, from the lake to  the mark, up into the woods.

It was a great day when Tommy F. Stephen G. Boone R. Liam T. Bay J. Oliver G. Matthew A. Ryan H. Kaito T. Theo T. Jack S. Landon K. Cole R. David C. Wilson  F. Reid S. Reynolds A. Garrett M. Asher C. and Aaron W. all tested themselves in this impressive feat.

As dinner came to a close, the boys were treated to (in my opinion) the best dessert at camp, the long-missed ice cream cookie sandwiches. This dessert was once a staple at camp, but after a short hiatus it made its return tonight much to the delight, and screams, of the campers. After dessert, and a short round of staff announcements, it was time for the  moment everyone had been waiting for, the announcement of tonight’s evening activity.  Tonight, we are playing……… Little Chief?

Unlike every other tribal activity we do at camp, Little Chief isn’t a competitive battle where the winning tribe moves one step closer to the banner. Instead, Little Chief is when we set aside time to recognize and celebrate the growth that we see in campers every day.

The ceremony is broken into 4 parts, the first of which is to celebrate bars in activities. Almost all activities at camp have three bars; bronze, silver, and gold, which shows a camper’s level of proficiency. Tonight, we recognize the following campers for achieving a new bar.

We believe that camp is as special as it is because of the people that make it up.  That’s why for the third part of the ceremony, we recognize the people who come back to camp year after year. There are a few milestones that we recognize and give a gift to as campers come back to camp. First years will receive their “Skins” a piece of leather that will fill up with markings that will tell their story at camp for years to come. Third Years get a metal pin put on their “Skins”. Six-year Sons of Timberlake receive a hand made silver pendant, and ten-year sons receive a mini canoe paddle that will hang in the dining hall forever.
