Saturdays are for the boys
Another beautiful day at camp today! This morning our boys woke up to the sun shining and the bird chirping. At breakfast this morning we had pancakes and sausage, a crowd pleaser. Boys then headed out to do the morning yell with Wells F and then to chapel led by Mac P and a true story by none other than John Menendez. Cabin clean up time came and went and who knows, maybe Stomper’s Knob will get two 10s in a row?
Morning activities started with two trips heading out, a bouldering trip to Grandmother with Jackson T, Silas S, Andrew I, Danny W, Zach W, Asa C, Kiran S, and Sam R and a kayaking trip to the Tuckaseegee headed out with Kenny C, Sean A, Myer S, William F, David F, and Peter K. Before we knew it, it was time for lunch, which was greek pita, followed by the announcement of the winners of last night’s junior and intermediate camp tribe game… the GOLDEN EAGLES. Today’s cabin inspection winner was Stomper’s Knob with a 9.75. Rest time came and went and campers enjoyed trading post and free time activities before heading out for their afternoon activities. Dinner was cheese tortellini, delicious as always, with cake for dessert. The AND NOW announcement told campers we would be having our first Little Chief of the summer and then following Little Chief, senior camp played counselor hunt.
This ceremony is something we do every week where we all gather around the Council Ring fire and celebrate the accomplishments from the week. At each ceremony we recognize boys who received bars in their activities. This week Stephen J and Adams H received their archery bronze, Asa C, Tucker L, Kenny C, Ellis T, Trey W, and Elias H received their canoeing bronze, while Silas S received his climbing bronze. Mose C received his field sports bronze while Robert I got his gold. In guitar class, Lukas L, Cole S, Tommy L, Mose C, and Reed P earned their bronze. Wes H, David F, and Ellis T earned their mountain biking bronze. On the lake in swimming River H, Lane C, Will G, Tommy L, David D, and Tobias C received their bronze, while Erik D, Patterson S, Trevor S, JB S, Sewell B, and Danny W earned their bronze in tennis. While those boys worked on bronze bars, Patterson S also received his tennis silver. Lastly, Trevor S earned his wrestling bronze. Bars are something to help earn marks in our Little Chief system. These accumulate over the years. We start with bronze bars and then work towards gold bars.
Next up in our ceremony are camper and counselor commendations. Here at camp one of our goals is teaching boys how to have courage, humility, empathy, and grit, so we take time each week to recognize boys who are exhibiting those qualities in cabin life and around camp. Camper commendations are voted on by campers in the cabin, while counselor commendations are determined by each cabin’s counselors. As counselors call each boy’s name who earned commendations, they come forward, dip their hands in their tribe’s paint and leave a handprint on our standard to represent the mark they are leaving at camp. Normally that wraps up our ceremony, but once a session we like to recognize our Sons of TImberlake. We celebrate year milestones for our 1st year, 3rd year, 6 year, and 10 year guys. We believe the mission of camp is achieved when boys are coming back year after year. A boys first year at camp, they receive a skin with their tribe’s brand and notations for any marks they received while they were here. It stays with them year after year and things keep getting added, so that by the time they have been here 10 years it’s full. Our 3rd years receive a pin on their skin with the eagle from the camp logo. The 6 years receive a necklace with a mountain emblem, and our 10 years receive a paddle that will hang in the dining hall. Our 1A Sons of Timberlake are:
